I’ve noticed there is not a lot of people in the North East working in film and tv development so I’ve set this up not only to promote my work as a script development freelancer and producer but also because I’m interested in connecting with people who work in development in the North East, so that we can advocate for more training and industry opportunities. It’s all with the ultimate aim of getting more Northern stories on our screens.
About Me: Roxy Mckenna
I’m a smoggie now living in Newcastle. I’ve spent a long time working with and supporting screenwriting and directing talent. After producing a low budget diy feature in 2005, I joined Northern Film + Media (now North East Screen) and was able to support writers, directors and producers through commissioning and exec producing work which included 14 Random Acts for Channel 4 many of which were TX’d and managing dozens of development programmes with industry partners. I then spent 4 years at BFI NETWORK and exec produced over 25 shorts, developed numerous features and ran multiple editions of Script Lab. I also programmed industry days, mixers and screenings in partnership with festivals and cinemas across the North.
Right now I work freelance developing writers for New Writing North and doing script editing/reading. At New Writing North we are building a slate of exciting new tv work from writers from across the North of England as well as running a genre feature film development scheme in partnership with Film4.
I served as a board member of the wonderful Beacon Films for 5 years and picked up an MA in Screen Project Development. In between all that and whilst I raised my kids I co-founded and was director of family focused creative company Chalk so I can also lay on a baby rave if needed.
